This was a read that kept me guessing at every turn, jumping at every shadow, and a burning need to turn the pages faster to see what the epic outcome would be! Needless to say this was a book that had me hooked! It’s been one year since Ava’s parents died and she lived with her aunt and uncle。 We open to the day where they are moving out of their ancestral manor after economical issues and moving into a smaller house nearby。 But when Ava learns that the Miller family was the ones to purchase her house, she’s a bit enraged。 There has been bad blood between her family and the Millers for longer than she knows, but it was the Millers’ care who crashed into her parents and killed them one year ago。Ava especially doesn’t get along well with the children either, Freya and Dominic go to her school now and things have never been very good between them, even before the accident。 Freya and Dominic run their own ghosthunters show online and when Ava belatedly realizes she left a mural on the walls of her property, she feels the need to cover it up。A quick backstory about the town is that there’s a ghost story called Dead-Eye Saide。 Sadie was a girl who was reportedly murdered hundreds of years ago, near Ava’s home if you believe the stories。 Stories claim that her eyes were carved out of her。 They say if you see Sadie, it means you’re going to die…soon! The ghost story plays a large part in the story and I was all for it!Anyway, Ava is determined to cover up her mural before it appears on the Millers’ ghosthunter show and she is ridiculed for her artwork, when on the way to it, she finds a dead body…with the eyes carved out!I was very much hooked from the get-go with this book! It was super creepy and chilling as Ava starts to see things。 Quick glimpses of shadowy figures who aren’t there at a second glance。 Times where she swears she’s seeing a girl with dark hollows in place of her eyes。 Is it Sadie? Or is Ava just seeing things? I absolutely love when this happens in a book! Why, I don’t know。 It’s positively terrifying, but I guess because I’m reading it I can enjoy it more than if it were a movie。 I’d be downright terrified to see this as a movie without it having been a book first! Lol。This book was so spine-tingling horrifying in some ways! Not only do we have a murder mystery, one that looks like a ghost is the murderer—which you can never really say is far-fetched in books today—but there are possible leads to a true haunting too。What drew me in even more was the romance, because yes folks, there was a romance。 Ava and Dominic Miller。 Yup, a Miller! I won’t get into how they were drawn together that first time, but when Ava is needing help on her final art project, Dominic is somehow the one to give her some advice。 I wouldn’t call them downright enemies, but with the bad blood between their families and the fact that Ava and his sister, Freya were archrivals for the art competition just spun up loads of tension and hostility between the two。 And yet, they have these moments where they find they have common interests and things just kind of take off from there, ever so slowly。 I love a good slow-burn romance and these two had that in spades! The mystery element was done exceedingly well。 I can honestly say, I did not see this one coming! I thought I had my whodunit and it was a good suspect, a very good one and I had motive and opportunity, but then that theory was blown out of the water when the real killer was revealed。 My jaw dropped! And then it dropped further as the story wove into its epic conclusion, because this conclusion was Epic, with a capital E!Kat Ellis has blown things out of the water with her latest horror novel, Burden Falls! It’s an edgy, eerie mystery read that is perfect for this time of year! If you love a good chilling ghost story with suspense and a mystery to keep you guessing until the very end, this is the book for you!Overall Rating 5/5 stars 。。。more

There were unfortunately a few things that I did not enjoy with this book。 First it randomly mentions Covid in response to why masked parties (as in masquerade) started。 Covid is never mentioned again, there is no one wearing masks, no one concerned about distancing etc。 When we do go to a masked party, the masks are all traditional eye/disguise masks- not face masks。 This just felt really annoying to me as if it was trying too hard to be relevant。 There was a lot of tell, not show, and I did no There were unfortunately a few things that I did not enjoy with this book。 First it randomly mentions Covid in response to why masked parties (as in masquerade) started。 Covid is never mentioned again, there is no one wearing masks, no one concerned about distancing etc。 When we do go to a masked party, the masks are all traditional eye/disguise masks- not face masks。 This just felt really annoying to me as if it was trying too hard to be relevant。 There was a lot of tell, not show, and I did not believe in the love plot line at all。 Saying all that, it was definitely creepy and I think if you enjoy YA horror then you will enjoy it。 Not for me, but I can see it being enjoyed throughout spooky season。CAWPILE: 4。71 (low 3*)Characters- 4。 I didn't like the MC, and I didn't believe in any of the side characters motives。Atmosphere- 6。 Credit where credit is due, it was a creepy setting and made me look over my shoulderWriting Style- 5。 As I said, too much tell not show。 I don't know why I was meant to hate The Millers, there were a lot of other plot points that I was told, but not shown why I was meant to feel that way, but I won't mention because spoilersPlot- 5。 It was OK。 fairly predictable, but the creep element helped it。Intrigue- 5。 Again, fairly predictable, there were a couple twists I didn't expect, and these came out of no where, if there had been subtle hints I would have preferred it。Logic- 3。 Nothing made sense to me。 This goes back to the tell not show, there wasn't enough world building to believe in anything that was happening。Enjoyment- 5。 It was fine。 I'm unhauling because I'm not going to read it again。 Objectively, I can see people enjoying this, it just wasn't for me。 。。。more

I can see why readers enjoy Ellis' brand of writing。 Atmospheric, eerie and makes you debate whether it's paranormal or man doing the slaughtering。 This is my first novel by Ellis and I'm definitely looking forward to more of her style。 Ava Thorn lost her parents in a brutal car accident almost a year ago。 Now, due to financial struggles, she has to move out of her childhood home only to find out that the one buying her home is none other than the man who killed her family in that deadly crash, I can see why readers enjoy Ellis' brand of writing。 Atmospheric, eerie and makes you debate whether it's paranormal or man doing the slaughtering。 This is my first novel by Ellis and I'm definitely looking forward to more of her style。 Ava Thorn lost her parents in a brutal car accident almost a year ago。 Now, due to financial struggles, she has to move out of her childhood home only to find out that the one buying her home is none other than the man who killed her family in that deadly crash, Madoc Miller。 If that isn't the worst part, she becomes primary suspect in a string of eye-gouging murders unraveling across the town。 The age old feud between Thorns and Millers starts to bleed it's bloody history into Ava's world。 Right on the back of that feud is the ancient legend about Dead-Eyed Sadie who kills by taking the eyes of her victims。 Ellis easily lures readers into wondering who, or what, is the culprit behind the torturous killings of the local kids。 Definitely a fun excursion into the macabre for a young adult thriller。 The beginning is a slow ride into the build-up of the characters, history and events leading up to current circumstances。 While I wasn't wholly invested due to the slower pace I still found myself intrigued by the lead-up。 Each character is well crafted and given a realistic depth that readers can find connection in。 The urban legend surrounding Sadie was pretty captivating in an all at once creepy and sad way。 Her current presence being creepy and her past being sad。 Ellis has an excellent way of tying things together。 The way she worked everything into the plot and created this clean sweep of the storyline was expertly done。 I did not figure out the mystery by the end even though my inkling staggered in a few close directions。 I wasn't into any particular character over another but I did enjoy how everything meshed together。 Ava was slightly on the too dark and broody level for my character liking but I can see how her persona can reflect a realistic and connectable image for other readers。 Looking for a slow building manifestation of eerie atmosphere for your Fall TBR? I'd recommend this one to young adult readers。 Thank you Penguin Teen for the gifted advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review。 True rating 3。5/5。 。。。more

The story had a lot of promise。 I felt like there was a lot of filler though that I was skimming over, which made the book longer than it really needed to be。 Especially when targeted to YA。 The ending was a surprise though。

What I loved with Harrow Lake, the other book by Kat Ellis that I read last year, was the setting。 And I couldn’t help but mention it because it’s the same with Wicked Little Deeds, only this time, the town is called Burden Falls。 Burden Falls is one eerie town, surrounded by mystery and dripping with countless superstitions and it sets the story for me perfectly。 I felt the atmosphere of the town and was hooked right from the start。I liked that the book started with lots of mystery right away。 What I loved with Harrow Lake, the other book by Kat Ellis that I read last year, was the setting。 And I couldn’t help but mention it because it’s the same with Wicked Little Deeds, only this time, the town is called Burden Falls。 Burden Falls is one eerie town, surrounded by mystery and dripping with countless superstitions and it sets the story for me perfectly。 I felt the atmosphere of the town and was hooked right from the start。I liked that the book started with lots of mystery right away。 That really sets my mood of reading of this book。 I was so invested and kept guessing about lots of things till the last quarter of the book。 I don’t really get scared reading a horror book but I know when a book is scary。 And Wicked Little Deeds is one scary book。 I also liked the bit of supernatural in this book。 Well, I won’t spoil if there is really a supernatural element but I love the mystery surrounding it。I found the main protagonist, Ava, a very well-written character。 She’s strong and capable despite everything。 But don’t be fooled she’s also vulnerable especially after becoming a suspect in a murder。 I love solving murders with my favorite characters and I enjoyed reading Ava trying to connect the dots and solve the mystery。 Ava is just so brave。 I was rooting for her right from the start。 She’d been through a lot and still going through a lot but she kept going。 I love her。 I also love Dominic。 Seriously, the main characters are very well-written。Even though the book started with a bang and mystery, I thought the pace was a bit slow but it picked up really soon。 Then the pace became just enough for a story in this genre。 I also think it’s brilliant that the chapters are short。 It didn’t just make me keep reading but it made the tension alive。 This is a page-turner。 the author knows exactly what to reveal in the right moment in the story so there was no dull moment or info-dumping part。 I also think the story wrapped very neatly。If you’re a fan of YA, mystery, horror and thriller, this book is perfect for you。 A big bonus is the setting, so atmospheric and eerie, it’s perfect escape。 。。。more

I have to make a small confession - this is not a genre I typically go for and I was very hestitant when I started to read it because I am a huge wimp when it comes to anything scary! However, it sounded so good and I've heard so many good things about it so far that I knew I had to give the story a try and I am SO glad I did! I like to try and stray away from my usual genres every know and again because I love finding amazing gems like this! The story was immediately intriguing and I was hooked throughout! Once I got into it, I found it hard to put down。 I really enjoyed how atmospheric it was! The author sets the scene very well and the book has a creepy, chilling and fantastically eerie feel。 Ava is our main character and also she is unfortunately the main suspect of the murder investigation in the eyes of the police due to her rival relationship to the victim。 Now she is determined to clear her name and find the true killer! The characters are all really interesting and I loved the connections that were revealed between them! As well as being very spooky, the story is brilliantly clever with so many amazing twists that I could've never seen coming! Wicked Little Deeds is a spine chilling and mind-bending ghost story that has made me a fan of the genre! Thank you so much for having me on the tour! 。。。more

Is it someone in the community, or Dead-Eyed Sadie, the town ghost? This book was described as Riverdale meets The Haunting of Hill House。 Usually, I hate it when people say "this book is x meets y", because it never is。 However, I do think that this comparison is spot on。 The whole story line feels like it could have been a season of Riverdale, with all the messy drama and family secrets piling up。I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a solid YA horror novel。 This is very much atmospheric horror as well - creepy small town, creepy ghost/urban legend, etc。 This book has a a couple of things that I really love in it: the enemies to lovers trope, and an unreliable narrator。 Our MC keeps seeing what she thinks is the town ghost Dead-Eyed Sadie。。。but is she actually seeing ghosts or is she just hallucinating as a way of coping with her grief and trauma?A couple of things I didn't love: -The vague mentioning of COVID at the beginning which didn't add anything to the story and also confused me at points (are we still mid-pandemic? if we are, why are these kids partying in close quarters?)。 I feel like it could have just not been acknowledged, seeing as it didn't lead to a broader discussion or explain any major plot point。-Some of the dialogue and Ava's inner monologue was a bit。。。odd。 At some points it read like a text message (when it wasn't supposed to be) or comment on one of my TikToks。 I would never thing "hahahahaha" to myself。 Idk。 It doesn't happen too often though, so it's pretty easy to look pastI loved the family rivalries and drama, which is set up quite well in the first third of the novel。 The side characters were likable, but didn't necessarily add much to the story until we got near the end。I do feel like the pacing of this book was a bit off in the first half of the book。 It seemed like some scenes or thoughts were cut short, only to be finished later (and sometimes I'd forget what it tied in to)。 However this was fixed in the second half, which flowed much better in my opinion (and had much more tension/spooks)。I absolutely loved the plot twist and how that panned out。 The ending also left me feeling satisfied and knowing just enough about the character's lives after-the-fact。If you're a fan of horror/mystery and are looking for the perfect spooky season read, this may be the book for you! 。。。more

Thank you so much to the publisher Penguin for providing me with an advanced copy, this in no way affects my opinion。 Thrillers are not something that I would generally gravitate towards, but I am so glad that I agreed to take part in this book tour as I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading Wicked Little Deeds。 It was every part atmospheric and believable simultaneously; if you like YA thrillers, I highly suggest that you take a look at Wicked Little Deeds。 I really liked all of the characters wit Thank you so much to the publisher Penguin for providing me with an advanced copy, this in no way affects my opinion。 Thrillers are not something that I would generally gravitate towards, but I am so glad that I agreed to take part in this book tour as I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading Wicked Little Deeds。 It was every part atmospheric and believable simultaneously; if you like YA thrillers, I highly suggest that you take a look at Wicked Little Deeds。 I really liked all of the characters within Wicked Little Deeds, and they all added something important to the story。 As the main character, Ava was brilliant; I really liked how she addressed the situations she was forced into and how she reacted。 The only minor issue that I have regarding the characters is that I would have liked to learn more about some of them, especially Carolyn, Ava's aunt。 I just feel that that would have added something else to the story。 While there is an element of romance within Wicked Little Deeds, it doesn't overpower the rest of the story, which I really appreciated as, within some thrillers, it becomes less about the plot and more about any possible romance。 But I have to say that the atmosphere is what really brought Wicked Little Deeds to life for me。 I loved Kat Ellis's writing style, and it created such a brilliant, haunting atmosphere that did leave me a little bit frightened, but we all know that I am a bit of a scaredy-cat! Kat Ellis's writing style is so descriptive that you can imagine yourself standing in the same situation, which is what I want from my supernatural thrillers。 When it comes to the ending of Wicked Little Deeds, I didn't guess immediately who the killer was, but much like Ava, I was able to piece it together as we got more clues。 I liked Wicked Little Deeds because it was believable, which I always love from the thrillers that I read。 The only thing I wanted was for the resolution to have been a little longer; it felt as if we spent ages to get to the point, and it was over very quickly。 I do have to mention the audiobook as I used to make sure that I got this review up on time。 The audiobook does a brilliant job at submersing you into the story and making you not want to leave until you have finished。 If you like YA thrillers I highly suggest that you pick up Wicked Little Deeds; it is going to keep you turning the pages well into the night so that you can find out who the killer is。 。。。more

4。5 stars! Wonderfully creepy! This was masterful storytelling with an ending I did not see coming。 I loved the buildup and family history as well as all the secondary characters。 This felt like watching a season of Riverdale, except better scripted and with more realistic characters。 These characters who have grown up together in a small town have their lives intertwined in ways they never saw coming。 Teen drama, a sweet romance, and lots of mystery made this a super fun, creepy read。 *I receiv 4。5 stars! Ava Thorn’s family have lived in the small town of Burden Falls for generations。 The Bloody Thorns of Thorn Manor are as well known as the legend of Dead-Eyed Sadie, the town’s most famous ghostly legend – as is the fact that a sighting of Sadie is supposed to portend tragedy for any Thorn unlucky enough to catch a glimpse of her。 Following a horrific accident that killed her parents, Ava is reluctantly leaving Thorn Manor – and its ghosts – behind her。But when pretty and popular Freya Miller – Ava Thorn’s family have lived in the small town of Burden Falls for generations。 The Bloody Thorns of Thorn Manor are as well known as the legend of Dead-Eyed Sadie, the town’s most famous ghostly legend – as is the fact that a sighting of Sadie is supposed to portend tragedy for any Thorn unlucky enough to catch a glimpse of her。 Following a horrific accident that killed her parents, Ava is reluctantly leaving Thorn Manor – and its ghosts – behind her。But when pretty and popular Freya Miller – Ava’s school nemesis and the daughter of the man who ruined her life – is found brutally murdered, Ava begins to wonder if the creepy stories that surround her family might be true after all。 Reluctantly teaming up with Freya’s brother Dominic, Ava begins investigating the truth behind Dead-Eyed Sadie。 Who was she – and why does every tragedy in town seem to lead back to a Thorn? As secrets are uncovered and old truths are laid bare, Ava and Dominic must confront both the past, and the killer who is waiting for them in the present。Combining the compulsive suspense of a thriller with the sinister chills of a ghost story, Wicked Little Deeds (published as Burden Falls in the US) is the perfect page-turner to pick up as the nights begin to draw in! I was rapidly drawn into the story and, with the cliff-hanger chapter endings and constant stream of mysteries and revelations, I read the book in just a couple of sittings。Ava is, if not always a likeable character, a very sympathetic one。 Grieving for her parents and the loss of her family home, she’s angry and resentful but also determined, driven, and brave。 I liked her very much – even when she was being horrid to her friends or lashing out at easy targets like the Miller family – and I really liked how resilient and resourceful she was。 Kat Ellis has done a fantastic job of capturing what its like to be a teenager – all high drama and shifting emotions that, sometimes, you barely understand yourself。 And that applies equally well to the other characters too – from queen bee Freya and Ava’s preppy best friend Ford to Freya’s quieter, more reflective (and unbearably handsome) brother Dominic, all of the characters came across as real people with real, messed-up emotions and shifting, complex motivations。The novel blends the mystery/thriller and horror/supernatural elements of the story together really well, although I’d say the focus does stay on the mystery throughout as Ava and Dominic work to stop the spate of murders and uncover the truth behind the old Thorn family legends。 That said, things do go towards the horrific in places – there are some fairly gory moments when the bodies are discovered, and some of the descriptions tend towards the gruesome so readers of a sensitive disposition should be forewarned。 Trigger warnings also for bereavement, a road traffic collision, mentions of alcohol abuse/alcoholism, mentions of depression, psychological abuse, and drug abuse。 Taking the edge off all those dark themes, there are also some fantastic friendships, cutting humour, and a gentle, nicely interwoven romance。Saying any more about the plot would be to risk spoilers but I will say that this was definitely an edge-of-your-seat, can’t-turn-the-pages-fast-enough read for me! Once the story got going, I was so eager to get back to my book and get to the next chapter – definitely one of those reads where I wanted to put life on hold for a bit! Perfect for anyone looking who loves dark and creepy mysteries or YA thrillers with a horror twist, Wicked Little Deeds might have been my first novel by Kat Ellis, but it certainly won’t be my last!NB: This review appears on my blog at https://theshelfofunreadbooks。wordpre。。。 as part of the blog tour for the book。 My thanks go to the publisher for providing a copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review。 。。。more
